History

ELC Technologies has a long and rich history. We not only employ an agile approach with our clients, we have embraced this same philosophy throughout our own evolution. Since our inception, technology and market demands have rapidly shifted and our business has agilely responded.

Humble beginnings
Jonathan Siegel began the company in 1991 as a sole proprietorship selling and installing network hardware under the name Electric Connections. (Yes, this is the genesis of the initials ELC.) Under this business model, we first serviced small law firms and medical offices and then moved onto technology companies.

Early web applications
As demand for web-based software applications grew in the 1990s, ELC began filling this early need, developing applications using a wide range of programming languages for notable customers such as PolyComm, WeddingChannel.com, and Callwave.

Packaging products
In 2000, Jonathan began a self-funded venture with William Maggs, former CTO of Palm, Inc. to transition the business into a product-bearing organization. Within 6 months, the arena for software sales had stalled and the new venture was abandoned.

Jonathan then restructured the company into an LLC and renamed it ELC Technologies. From 2001-2004, ELC continued building web applications for clients while simultaneously serving as an incubator for Jonathan's entrepreneurial ideas. From the incubator, two leading-edge offerings were born.

  • PostASAP -- An on-line posted mail delivery service that utilized custom print driver technology to capture print tasks, provide an envelop metaphor for collecting to and from address information, and a secure delivery platform to allow third party "print, stamp and stuff" of the mail items.
  • BillASAP -- An online invoicing solution for small businesses providing innovative guaranteed delivery receipts for invoices.

The Ruby years
In 2005, Ruby on Rails captured ELC’s interest and a core team of developers began a pilot project to evaluate its effectiveness. This initiative led to the creation of RightCart.com, a copy-and-paste shopping cart leveraging many aspects of the new web, in just 6 weeks. RightCart.com was featured on the RubyOnRails.com weblog and was acquired in 2007 by Buy.com.

Over night, ELC transformed into a Rails enthusiast and began learning the ins and outs of scaling Rails to become one of the largest and most knowledgeable Ruby on Rails practices in the world. The enthusiasm has proven infectious as Rails adoption has swept across the developer community.

Today, ELC is helping deliver some of the hottest Ruby on Rails applications for companies such as Cisco, MediaTrust, TuneCore and Tribune.

Elc Technology

The spirit behind ELC is to create an environment where we can work on cutting edge applications, develop our skills, and make it easy to be incredibly productive.
